Building GEM Studios

How I built a connected content business across capture, original programming, brand integration, licensing, distribution, and monetization.

Content strategy · Programming · Distribution · Monetization

01

Context

The opportunity was bigger than campaign execution.

Get Engaged had the audience relationships, platform access, and creative instincts to build more than one-off marketing campaigns.

The larger opportunity was a content business: capture work for clients, develop original programming, integrate brands into a growing slate, and extend content across distribution partners.

I oversaw the GEM Studios strategy and operating capability, connecting those pieces inside one model designed to build audience, network value, and monetization together.

02

The signal

Content could become a compounding business asset.

Content created for one purpose could generate additional value through recurring formats, brand integration, licensing, syndication, and platform-native distribution.

When creation, distribution, audience, and monetization reinforce one another, content stops behaving like disposable output.

03

The move

Connect creation to distribution and monetization.

I built GEM Studios as the operating layer connecting content strategy and production to originals, brand partnerships, platform distribution, licensing, and monetization.

04

What we built

Four connected ways to create value.

Each offering strengthened the others—and gave the business more than one way to turn content into durable value.

  1. 01Capability layer

    Content capture

Build cross-platform capture strategies around historical performance, audience insight, and the formats most likely to move existing and new fans.

  2. 02Capability layer

    Original programming

Develop, produce, edit, and launch recurring short-form concepts through an in-house creative and production operation.

  3. 03Capability layer

    Brand integration

Connect products and partners to relevant shows, verticals, and audience categories without treating integration as an interruption.

  4. 04Capability layer

    Licensing + syndication

Expand the content footprint across platform partners, optimize vertical video, and connect distribution to audience growth and monetization.

05

Proof

The business gained an engine it could compound.

The result was not simply more content. It was a portfolio of services, original formats, integrations, and distribution paths that could create value for clients, audiences, and the network.

By Q1 2023, GEM Studios documented more than 100 content-capture clients while its broader show network operated at significant audience scale. The focused network results are detailed in the companion platform case study.

  • 01

    One connected business

Capture, originals, integration, licensing, distribution, and monetization operated as one system rather than disconnected services.

  • 02

    In-house speed

An internal team could move new short-form concepts from development through launch in days instead of traditional weeks or months.

  • 03

    A recurring slate

Original programming launched every month, creating a portfolio that could learn, expand, and compound rather than reset project by project.

  • 04

    Audience-led integration

Brands and products could be matched to relevant shows, categories, creators, and communities inside an existing content network.

  • 05

    Distribution as leverage

Content was built to travel across platform partners, creating more audience and monetization opportunity from each format.

Its information is recreated here in the portfolio’s visual system rather than publishing the original compiled deck. The 5250 Studios archive remains a separate earlier career chapter.

07

What it demonstrates

Build the business around the content.

The strategic value was the connection between creation, programming, integration, distribution, audience, and monetization. Each layer made the others more useful.

GEM Studios turned content from a project expense into an operating asset: something the business could create, distribute, license, learn from, and grow repeatedly.
